Every great online store starts with an idea.
Maybe it's a product you believe in. Maybe it's a side business you're ready to take full-time.
Either way, you're ready to build something that sells. This guide shows you how in 10 clear steps, plus the features and apps that help your store sell.
- How to sign up and choose the right Shopify plan
- How to get your domain and pick a theme
- How to add products, payments and shipping
- How to test and launch your store
- The features and apps that turn visitors into buyers
No coding. No guesswork. Let's build your store.
1. Go to the Shopify Website
Every store starts with one click.
This step shows you where to begin, and what to have ready before you do.
Visit Shopify.com
First, go to shopify.com.
Click "Start free trial" or "Start for free" at the top of the homepage.

Shopify gives you a free trial, so you can explore the platform and build your store before you pay anything. The trial length and introductory offer change from time to time, so check what's on offer when you sign up.
Have These Ready First
Setup goes much faster when your materials are ready. Before you click, gather:
- Your brand name. Haven't picked one yet? Read our guide on choosing your brand name.
- Your logo, ideally a PNG or SVG with a transparent background.
- Your first products, with prices, sizes and photos. Still deciding? See how to choose products to sell online.
- An email address you check every day.
2. Sign Up and Create Your Store
Creating your account takes a few minutes.
Here's what Shopify asks, and how to answer so your dashboard is set up for you.
Create Your Account
Once you click "Start free trial," Shopify asks you to:
- Enter your email address.
- Create a password, or sign up with Google, Apple or Facebook.
- Choose your store name. You can change it later.

Answer a Few Quick Questions
Shopify then asks a few simple questions to tailor your dashboard, such as:
- Are you already selling, or just starting?
- What will you sell: physical products, digital products or services?
- Where do you want to sell: online store, social media, in person?
- Where is your business located?
There are no wrong answers. You can skip any question and change everything later.
When you're done, you land in your Shopify admin: the dashboard where you'll manage products, orders, customers and settings.
This is where your store really begins.
Your free store address: every new store gets an address ending in .myshopify.com. Customers won't see it once you connect your own domain in Step 4.
3. Choose a Shopify Plan
The right plan depends on where your business is today, not where you hope it will be.
This step explains the plans so you can start smart and upgrade later.
Pick the Plan That Fits Today
Before you can sell, you'll pick a plan.
Go to Settings → Plan in your admin to see the plans and prices for your country.

Shopify sets different prices in different countries, and prices change from time to time. Always check Shopify's pricing page for your region.
Which Plan Should You Choose?
- Basic covers everything a new store needs: a secure checkout, unlimited products, discount codes and abandoned cart recovery.
- Grow adds more staff accounts and better reports, and is worth it once a small team runs the store.
- Advanced adds custom reports and more staff, for stores doing high volume.
- Plus is for large businesses that need checkout customization, B2B tools and dedicated support.
Start on Basic. You can upgrade at any time without rebuilding anything. Paying yearly saves about 25%, but only commit once you're sure the store is working.
4. Get a Domain Name
Your domain is your address on the internet.
This step shows you how to buy a new one or connect one you already own.
Buy or Connect Your Domain
A domain name is your store's online address, like yourbrand.com.
A professional domain builds trust, makes your brand easier to remember and looks better in ads and on packaging.
Go to Settings → Domains and choose one of two options:
- Buy a domain through Shopify: the simplest option. It connects to your store automatically.
- Connect an existing domain: if you already bought one from a registrar like Namecheap or GoDaddy, follow Shopify's steps to point it to your store.

Once it's connected, set it as your primary domain, so every visitor sees your brand's address.
Tips for a Good Domain
- Match your brand name exactly, if you can.
- Keep it short and easy to spell.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers.
- Choose .com for an international audience. A .com.bd domain is another option for a Bangladesh-focused brand, bought through a local registrar.
5. Choose and Customize Your Theme
Your theme decides how your store looks and feels.
This step helps you pick the right one and make it yours.
Pick Your Theme
Your theme controls your store's layout, colors, fonts and how products are shown.
Go to Online Store → Themes, then choose:
- Free themes: made by Shopify, clean, fast and mobile-friendly. A great place to start.
- Paid themes: made by independent designers, usually a one-time payment. They often include extra features, like mega menus and advanced filters, that save you paying for apps.
Try a theme with your own products and logo before you buy. Themes often look very different with real photos than in the demo.
Customize It to Fit Your Brand
Click "Customize" to open the theme editor. You can drag, drop and edit everything without code.

- Upload your logo and favicon.
- Set your brand colors and fonts under Theme settings.
- Add a hero banner with a clear headline and one button.
- Add featured products, collections and customer reviews.
- Check every change in the mobile preview.
Avoid pirated "nulled" themes. Cheap copies of paid themes can contain hidden malicious code and never get updates. Buy only from the Shopify Theme Store or trusted developers.
6. Add Your Products
Now it's time to bring your catalog to life.
This step covers every field that turns a product listing into a sale.
Create Your Product Listings
Go to Products → Add product and fill in each field:
| Field | What to add |
|---|---|
| Title | Clear and specific, like "Breathable Cotton Baseball Cap," not "Cap 01" |
| Description | Lead with the benefit, then add materials, size and care details |
| Media | Several high-quality photos, and a video if you have one |
| Price | Your selling price, plus a compare-at price to show a discount |
| Cost per item | What you paid, so Shopify can show your profit |
| Inventory | SKU and stock quantity, so you never sell what you don't have |
| Variants | Sizes, colors or materials, each with its own price, photo and stock |
| Shipping weight | The packed weight, so delivery rates are correct |
| Search engine listing | A page title and description using words customers search for |
Organize Products Into Collections
Go to Products → Collections to group products, like "Caps," "New Arrivals" or "Under ৳500."
Use smart collections to add products automatically by tag, type or price.
Write your own descriptions. Copying supplier text makes your store look like everyone else's, and gives Google no reason to rank your page.
7. Set Up Payments, Shipping and Taxes
A store isn't a store until customers can pay and receive their orders.
This step covers payments, delivery and taxes, including what works in Bangladesh.
Set Up Payments
Go to Settings → Payments. Your options depend on where your business is based.
- Shopify Payments: the simplest option where it's available, with no extra Shopify transaction fees.
- PayPal and other third-party gateways: available in many countries.
- Manual payment methods: cash on delivery, bank transfer and similar options.

If You're in Bangladesh
Shopify Payments isn't available for Bangladeshi merchants, so most local stores use:
- SSLCommerz: lets customers pay with bKash, Nagad, Rocket and local cards.
- Cash on delivery: add it under Manual payment methods. Many shoppers still prefer it.
Cut fake COD orders. Confirm each order by phone before shipping, or ask for a small advance payment through bKash.
Set Up Shipping and Taxes
Shipping
Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery:
- Create shipping zones, like "Inside Dhaka" and "Outside Dhaka," or domestic and international.
- Set flat rates, weight-based rates or free shipping above a set order value.
- Connect your courier. Bangladeshi couriers like Pathao, Steadfast and RedX offer apps or integrations.
Taxes
Go to Settings → Taxes and duties.
Shopify can calculate common taxes automatically, but rules vary by country and product, so check with a local accountant.
8. Create Your Essential Pages
Customers want to know who they're buying from.
This step covers the pages every store needs to look complete and trustworthy.
Build the Pages Every Store Needs
Go to Online Store → Pages and create:
- About Us: your story, your mission and the people behind the brand.
- Contact Us: a form, email, phone number and WhatsApp.
- FAQ: answers about delivery, payment, sizes and returns.
- Size guide: essential for clothing, caps and shoes.
Add Your Policies
Go to Settings → Policies. Shopify gives you templates for:
- Refund and return policy.
- Shipping policy.
- Privacy policy.
- Terms of service.
Edit each template to match how your business really works. Clear policies build trust and reduce support questions.

9. Customize Navigation and Settings
Good navigation helps shoppers find what they want in a few clicks.
This step covers your menus and the settings to double-check.
Set Up Your Menus
Go to Online Store → Navigation.
- Main menu: add your key links, like Home, Shop, Collections, About and Contact.
- Footer menu: add your policies, FAQ and quick links.
Keep the main menu to five to seven items, and use dropdowns for sub-categories.
Organize it the way customers shop, like "Men," "Women," "Kids," "New Arrivals" and "Sale."
Double-Check Your Settings
Go to Settings → General (called "Store details" in some versions) and check:

- Store name and contact email.
- Business address.
- Time zone and units.
- Store currency, such as BDT. Set this before your first order, because it's hard to change later.
- Default language.
10. Preview, Test and Launch
You're almost there.
This step walks you through the final checks, and the click that makes your store live.

Test Everything First
Before you go live:
- Click the eye icon to preview your store.
- Place a test order using Shopify's test payment mode.
- Place a real cash-on-delivery order, then cancel it.
- Check that order confirmation emails look right.
- Open your store on a phone and a tablet.
- Review product details, photos, prices and search listings.
Then ask two or three friends to try buying something. Watch where they get confused, and fix it.
Remove the Password and Go Live
New stores are password-protected while you build them.
Go to Online Store → Preferences and turn off password protection.
That's it. Your store is live.
Launch, then improve. Your store doesn't need to be perfect on day one. Launch when it's clear, trustworthy and easy to buy from, then improve it based on what real customers do.
11. Must-Have Features for a High-Converting Store
Launching is just the beginning.
This step covers the features that turn visitors into buyers.
Five Features That Turn Visitors Into Buyers
A store that looks good isn't enough. It needs to make buying easy.
1. Mobile-First Design
Most shoppers browse on their phones, especially in Bangladesh.
- Test every page on a real phone.
- Make buttons big enough to tap.
- Keep text short and easy to scan.
2. Search-Friendly Pages
Help Google show your products to people searching for them.
- Write clear product titles and descriptions using real search words.
- Add alt text to every image.
- Edit the page title and description for each product and collection.
3. Fast Loading
Slow pages lose customers.
- Compress images before uploading.
- Avoid big sliders and autoplay videos on the homepage.
- Remove apps you don't use.
4. Trust Signals
New visitors look for proof that you're real before they buy.
- Show customer reviews and photos.
- Display payment methods, including cash on delivery.
- Make return, refund and delivery policies easy to find.
- Show a phone number or WhatsApp.
5. Easy Navigation
If shoppers can't find a product in a few clicks, they leave.
- Group products into clear collections, like "Best Sellers" and "New Arrivals."
- Turn on search and filters for size, color and price.
- Keep the main menu short.

12. The Best Apps to Supercharge Your Store
Apps add features your theme doesn't have.
This step shows which types of apps are worth installing first, and which to skip.
Start With These App Types
The Shopify App Store has thousands of apps. You only need a few to start.
| App type | What it does | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product reviews | Collects and shows customer reviews and photos | Builds trust and helps new visitors decide |
| Email marketing | Sends newsletters, offers and abandoned cart reminders | Brings customers back for repeat orders |
| Product recommendations | Suggests related products and bundles | Increases average order value |
| Courier and COD tools | Books deliveries and manages cash-on-delivery orders | Saves hours for Bangladeshi stores |
| Live chat or WhatsApp | Lets shoppers ask questions before they buy | Answers doubts at the moment of decision |
| Loyalty and rewards | Rewards repeat customers with points or discounts | Turns buyers into regulars |
Don't install too many apps. Each one can slow your store and add a monthly fee. Before installing, check whether your theme already has the feature.
